LayerKick / Engineering Journal

Field notes from the edge.

I'm building LayerKick solo: an edge platform for Shopify stores, plus the agent factory that writes most of the code. This journal is me writing it down as it ships, real dates and real numbers, including the ones that needed correcting later.

We compile Liquid to TSX.

How LayerKick turns a merchant's whole Shopify theme (sections, blocks, snippets, filters) into typed components that render at the edge. A parser, an IR, and 229 generated files.

How this journal gets written.

This is the meta entry: the actual pipeline behind these posts. AI writes the first draft, I edit it out loud, and because I talk into my screen all day, the voice is mine even when the typing isn't. Including this one, which was made the exact way it describes.

Have to pivot? Good.

Before LayerKick I built an upsell app and a Hydrogen theme, got about two-thirds through each, and pivoted. Both times the wall was the same, and it wasn't technical. This is the journey that led to a layer with the smallest ask I could design.

Your storefront, from the edge.

LayerKick serves your existing Shopify theme from Cloudflare's edge, about 63 milliseconds to first byte, without a rebuild. This journal is me writing down how it's built.

Product
All of this can run on your store.

LayerKick layers onto your existing Shopify theme, no rebuild needed, and serves it from the edge. It's a $200/mo beta and billing starts two weeks after signup, so you can see the difference on your own traffic first.
